Understanding PFAS: Their Effects and How We Can Protect Ourselves

Overview



A motion graphic designed to explain PFAS “forever chemicals’’ found in everyday environments, in a clear, accessible way. The video simplifies where PFAS come from, how they spread, and what people can do to reduce exposure.
Process





I began with scientific research from EPA sources, academic studies, and environmental health articles to build an accurate foundation.

Key steps included:
• Developing a clean icon and color system for clarity
• Storyboarding each sequence for smooth educational flow
• Animating charts, icons, and transitions to guide viewer focus
• Balancing scientific accuracy with approachable visual storytelling

The design uses motion, rhythm, and simplified forms to make complex chemistry easier to absorb.
Outcome

The final animation blends infographic clarity with gentle pacing, turning dense environmental data into an engaging and understandable visual narrative.
It became an early study in accessible science communication—work that directly influenced the development of my later Clean Plate app.
Reflection


This project taught me how motion, pacing, and color can shape comprehension and emotional tone. It strengthened my goal of using design to make complex scientific topics clear, trustworthy, and human-centered.
