Overview

This motion graphic was created to educate viewers about PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)—chemicals known as “forever chemicals” for their persistence in the environment and human body. The video translates complex research data into clear, accessible visuals that help audiences understand where PFAS come from, how they spread, and ways to minimize exposure.

Process

Before animating, I conducted research using EPA resources, academic studies, and environmental health articles to build a factual foundation. I designed a cohesive visual system inspired by clean iconography and soft color palettes to balance scientific content with visual clarity.

Each sequence was storyboarded, animated, and timed to narration for a rhythmic flow—helping viewers absorb information without feeling overwhelmed. The icons, data charts, and transitions were designed to guide focus, simplifying complex systems through motion and rhythm.

Outcome

The final animation blends infographic clarity and cinematic pacing to make environmental science more approachable. It served as an early exploration of accessible communication design—a project that later inspired my Clean Plate app.

“Good motion design moves more than visuals—it moves understanding.”

Reflection

This project deepened my understanding of how motion and design can simplify complex information without losing meaning. It also taught me the importance of pacing and tone, how visual rhythm and color can shape comprehension and emotional response. The process inspired me to continue merging design with science communication, leading directly to my later project Clean Plate.

“Really amazing work (as usual). Kelly brings a strong visual aesthetic and thoughtfulness to her projects, and her contributions consistently elevate class discussions and critiques.”
